Original cultivators of the Honey & Empress Dates – Coachella Valley Pioneers
The desert region of the Coachella Valley in southern California has become known for its agriculture since its development in the early 19th century. Geologist William P. Blake, who had surveyed the area in 1853, extolled the virtues of the desert soil, fed by a rich underground aquifer and warm climate. Encouraged by Blake’s report, desert farmers saw in the Coachella Valley a region that was particularly suited to the cultivation of dates. Distinctive groves of date palms began to dot the landscape, aided by the federal government’s promotion of free seeds.
In 1912, Everett DaVall, a rancher originally from Pennsylvania, saw an opportunity to start a successful farm here, and purchased a half-section of land from the railroad at $7.50 an acre. Soon the DaVall family’s Wonder Palms Date Ranch was founded, one of the earliest in the valley.
